The spotted lanternfly is native to China, India, Japan, and Vietnam and was first detected in the United States in 2014 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The non-native invasive insect attacks pines, grapes, apples, and stone fruits. It is spreading to other counties within Pennsylvania and Maryland residents should be on the lookout. If you see this insect, contact the University of Maryland Extension's Home and Garden Information Center to report your sighting.
Nancy Percivall, Committee Chair for Horticulture/Conservation, discussed the decline in firefly populations and things we can do to help fireflies recover. Schedules for our Standard Flower Show that will take place in May were distributed to members at our Februrary meeting. Sally Moore, Flower Show Chair, and JoAnn Cook discussed rules, instructions on registering, and staging horticultural and design exhibits. Information on conditioning horticultural exhibits will be provided at our April meeting.
