Design Exhibit: Spring Has Sprung – Petite Design with freedom of style not to exceed 8" in width, depth, and height. Staged on a white elevated bookshelf provided by the Design coordinator.
Designers: Sally Moore, Paulette Heward, Lynne Malley, and Rosa Johnson Crofton’s beginnings and the emergence of a powerful social movement run like water, alongside one another in the writing, research, and publications of one Rachel Carson. Who was this witness for nature? How did she evolve to become the most respected science writer in America and a “courageous woman who helped redefine the way humans look at their place in nature”?–Time. Members meet Rachel in a special living history presentation by Colleen Webster, Professor of English, Harford Community College and Master Naturalist (Harford County). Colleen portrays Rachel Carson in an intimate performance, bringing to life her character, her research and legacy, and her connection and research here in Maryland with the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, just 20 minutes down the road. Interim President Trish Demers presents Lauren Toomey, Pollinator Pathway Project Chair, with the FGCMD Award of Achievement for the Pollinator Pathway along the WB&A Trail.
The Crofton Cherry Blossom Festival could not have gone better with over 100 kids stopping by to create and take home their "painting" of cherry blossom branches. CVGC members manning the table included Jessica Kruse (Crofton Cherry Trees Project Chair), Jane McClanahan, Carol Buhr, and C.J. Salisbury. They helped the kids (and some adults) with the painting activity which resulted in a simple but elegant piece of art ready to frame. An informational board was shared with the community on how the cherry trees came to be along Crofton Parkway.
In the 1960's Kathryn "Kay" Callahan persuaded this new community of Crofton to replicate the beauty and glory of the Japanese cherry trees that were planted at the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. Kay was determined to have cherry trees in Crofton and was able to secure a Wheaton, MD nursery to plant the trees at cost, which was a mere $11.33 per tree, provided she could find 15 neighbors to also order trees. The Crofton Village Garden Club (CVGC) formed in 1969 with a mere 30 ladies, and they set their goals: to beauify, promote community, and improve the environment. Kay introduced the idea of the cherry tree plantings to the newly formed garden club and CVGC has carried on this commitment ever since. Homeowners around the parkway have joined in and cherry trees have been independently purchased and planted on residential properties, and the beauty of the springtime cherry blossom has spread! To celebrate Crofton's 50th Anniversary, CVGC pledged to plant 50 new cherry trees around the parkway and completed the project in 2022. Today's costs average approximately $200 a tree! With the help of good neighbors, the CVGC continues planting two Yoshino cherry trees every other spring and maintains the trees over the years along the parkway. Back Row: Paula Moratto, Nancy Percivall, Marcia Richard, Diane Smith and Sally Moore Front Row: Littany Hollerbach and Interim President Trish Demers CVGC members attend the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland Annual Meeting held at the Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center in Ellicott City. All donned their floral headbands to promote CVGC's upcoming flower show, 60's Flower Power, that will take place on Tuesday, May 21st from 2 PM to 6 PM at Crofton Library. FGCMD President Susie Middleton presents the Member Award of Honor to CVGC member Nancy Percivall for the creation of the Stonegate Nature Trail. Nancy took an abandoned woodland and turned it into a community nature trail. Her conservation efforts inspired the members of her club and neighborhood community to participate in restoring and protecting this woodland habitat. The Nature Trail not only provides habitat to pollinators and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, it benefits the community as a useable outdoor recreational area. FGCMD President Susie Middleton and CAR-SGC Director Monica Hansen present the Award of Achievement to CVGC member Lauren Toomey for the Pollinator Pathway along the WB&A Trail. At the conclusion of Lauren’s studies as a Watershed Steward, she proposed a creation of a pollinator pathway of native pollinator plantings along the WB&A Trail. Under the umbrella of Pollinator Pathways, Lauren was able to get assistance from her garden club members, Bee Lab, Watershed Stewards of Anne Arundel County and Master Gardeners resulting in the planting of 2,700 plants in 2022 and 4,700 plants in 2023!
Lauren was not in attendance and the award was accepted by Littany Hollerbach, CVGC Awards Committee Chair. Sustainable Gardening Tip: Pesticides can harm beneficial insects and wildlife, so it is best to use natural pest control methods. Planting companion plants, using physical barriers, and releasing beneficial insects are all effective ways to control pests naturally.
