Living in the Triangle's Vegetable Garden Contest was held Saturday, August 1st. Crofton Village Garden Club members JoAnn Cook, Beverly Frye, Sally Moore and Nancy Percivall (Living in the Triangle's Garden Editor) toured six gardens to carefully select the winner. Participating in the contest were Nora Bellows of Layton Street, Madeline and Kathryn Reilly of Straton Road, Lois Nichols (CVGC member) of Pleasant Meadow Road, Ginny Shearin of Farnborn Avenue, Mira and Ben Pry of Harcourt Avenue, and Katherine Mazza-Bell also of Harcourt Avenue. The gardens were evaluated on diversity of plants, sustainable practices, effective design, as well as aesthetic appeal. It was a very difficult decision, but in the end, Nora Bellows with her eight planters of Heirloom tomatoes grown by seed took top prize. Honorable Mentions included our own Lois Nichols and her lovely raised beds, Ginny Shearin with her freshly picked vegetables and Mira and Ben Pry with their variety of plants. Crofton Village Garden Club members Carol Morris and Paulette Heward attended the Children's Memorial Garden Dedication and Children's Remembrance Ceremony this past Saturday at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, Maryland. Carol said the Remembrance Ceremony was so moving. Each child's name was remembered and families stood as their little ones name was called. After the ceremony the ribbon at the garden entrance was untied and they entered the beautiful garden. Colorful metal flowers have been added and frames for swings were in place, interspersed throughout the plantings. Carol said it was a spiritual, peaceful feeling being there and knowing they had all been part of this wonderful endeavor.
Crofton Village Garden Club members Margo Antonelli, Marie Bryer, Paulette Heward, D'Ana Johnson, Carol Morris, Bonnie Pavlak, Marcia Richard and Sandra Robertson joined other volunteers at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena to help plant hundreds of plants in the Children's Memorial Garden. A dedication of the garden will take place on June 23. When volunteering for Giving Flowers, be sure to visit the garden.
