Nancy Percivall, Committee Chair for Horticulture, shared the history of straws and the effects plastic straws have on our environment. It is estimated that 500 million straws are used every day in America, and a significant amount of those end up in our oceans, polluting the water and killing marine life. She shared several types of straws that can be used in place of plastic straws – paper, acrylic, aluminum, bamboo, hay, and pasta. Several corporations and cities have banned the use of plastic straws. If we don’t act now, by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
