PROGRAM: Putting Your Garden to Bed for Winter

Felicia Giordano, Crofton resident and homeowner of the “Tuscan Nights” garden from our Garden Party garden tour, shared tips on preparing our gardens for winter.

• Cut back – Prune dead and diseased branches from trees and shrubs.
• Clean up – Pull dead and declining plants out.
• Plant – Fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. It allows the root system to establish during the winter months.
• Protect – Keep bulbs and tubers warm with a light layer of mulch. If you have a deer problem, protect plants with netting.
• Prepare – Divide plants, fertilize and add a light layer of mulch.​
