Crofton Village Garden Club Celebrates Earth Day with Violet Planting
For this year’s Earth Day celebration, Crofton Village Garden Club members came together in a collaborative effort to naturalize a bed of violets in the space between the Blue Star Memorial Garden and the Native Garden at the Crofton Community Library. The project was a true club effort, with members donating violets from their own gardens and working side by side to enhance this shared green space. The new violet bed highlights the club’s ongoing dedication to sustainability and eco-friendly gardening practices. It brings early spring color, strengthens pollinator habitat, and forms a natural, beautiful bridge between two of the club’s most cherished garden areas. Special thanks go to all CVGC members who contributed their time, plants, and energy to make this Earth Day project a success. Your generosity and teamwork made it possible. With appreciation to CVGC President Margo Antonelli, Blue Star Memorial Garden Project Chair Littany Hollerbach, Native Garden Project Chair Nancy Percivall and her husband George, Laura Austin, Trish Demers, Nancy Durose, Cindy Hare, Rosa Johnson, and Yuki Adams for their meaningful contributions to this effort. Together, club members continue to cultivate beauty, community, and environmental care—one plant at a time. Member Nancy Percivall and TLC are on the move! They will now meet on Monday's at 10 AM, weather permitting, at Crofton Library to maintain the Native Garden located beyond the Blue Star Memorial Garden. All are welcome to help with the garden – bring gloves and your gardening tools. It's a great way to keep in touch throughout the summer months!
Project Chair Don Pogue has been tending to the Native Garden located at Crofton Library. The garden is filling in nicely with native ferns, summersweet, and blue false indigo – just to name a few. The Native Garden creates a haven for pollinators like native bees and butterflies. It is also provides an abundance of seeds, berries, and habitat required for our native bird species.
When visiting the library, take a stroll through the Native Garden and enjoy the many native plants. Crofton Village Garden Club members participated in a Garden Crawl where members spent approximately 20 minutes at each garden doing maintenance. The first stop was the Crofton Community Library where members worked on the Blue Star Memorial Garden, Native Garden and Pollinator Garden. Members then traveled to Linthicum Walks, Swann Park, the Village Green Memorial Garden and the Peace Garden located at Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church.
Thank you to Nancy Percivall (Project Chair, Linthicum Walks) for organizing the event and to Frank DeVito (spouse to Camille DeVito, Project Chair, Blue Star Memorial Garden), Claudia West (Project Chair, Swann Park), Lois Nichols, Rosa Johnson, Diane Stovel, Lynn Pollock, Maria-Elena Bodnar (Project Chair, Peace Garden), Don Pogue (Project Chair, Native Garden) and Beverly Frye for participating in the event. Project Chair Camille DeVito and garden club members weeded, planted begonias and mulched the Blue Star Memorial Garden at the Crofton Community Library. Project Chair Don Pogue has spent many months preparing the Native Garden area for planting. Don and garden club members are making great progress with this new club project.
