Project Co-Chairs Cindy Hansen and Barbara Emden conduct a hands-on workshop where members create over 100 patriotic-themed floral arrangements for veterans. Following the workshop, club members deliver the arrangements to veterans residing in local assisted living facilities to express our gratitude for their service. Your garden can be a refuge of biodiversity, housing many different living things. A vast majority are insects. How do these insects and their relatives make our big world go round? Speaker Dr. Michael Raupp, Professor Emeritus of Entomology and Extension Specialist at the University of Maryland and The Bug Guy of media (television, radio, and magazine) renowned as he explains the parts they play in ecosystem services, in linking members of food webs, and in the pollination of plants and biological control. Members will have a greater appreciation for the important roles these little life forms – these insects – play in the ecology of your garden.

Jessica Hall, owner and operator of Harmony Harvest Farm located in Weyers Cave, Virginia, joined us via Zoom and shared a grower’s perspective on the chrysanthemum – our club flower. Jessica discussed the chrysanthemum's long presence in history, the differences between heirlooms and hybrids, and Harmony Harvest’s reasons for deciding to preserve heirlooms through their newly launched The Mum Project. She also discussed planting and growing tips for these lovely fall flowers.
Twenty varieties of heirloom chrysanthemum's were distributed among members. Members were asked to adopt a mum and share their findings, e.g. date of first bloom, number of blooms, overall height, etc., and submit a photograph to Harmony Harvest Farm. In celebration of National Garden Week members enjoyed a very informative live Zoom presentation hosted by FGCMD, Beautiful Native Plants Year-Round by Leah Brooks, Mt. Cuba Center's Public Programs Assistant. Mt. Cuba Center, located in Hockessin, Delaware is a beautiful botanic garden whose mission is to inspire an appreciation for the beauty and value of native plants and a commitment to support the habitats that sustain them. Both ladies have been actively involved helping CVGC with the clean up of the Pollinator Garden at Crofton Library, Linthicum Walks and Garden Tour 2023.
Led by garden tour co-chairs Cathy Gallagher and Maria Guyer, members review plans for the upcoming garden tour on Sunday, May 21. The Chair of each garden tour committee will present information to the members. Following the meeting, "garden teams" will meet with garden homeowners to finalize tasks for the garden tour.
