At our October meeting, Nancy Percivall, Committee Chair for Horticulture/Conservation, gave an engaging and informative presentation on the ecological importance of bats and how we can encourage them to thrive in our own backyards. She discussed how bats play a vital role in pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal, and offered practical tips on how to attract them by installing bat houses, planting night-blooming flowers, and reducing pesticide use.
Nancy also shared the inspiring story of Amanda Lollar, founder of Bat World Sanctuary, the only accredited bat sanctuary in the world. Located in Texas, the sanctuary provides a safe haven for injured, orphaned, and exploited bats. Many of the bats have endured neglect or abuse, and the sanctuary offers them a second chance at life in a peaceful and protected environment. Through partnerships with zoos, researchers, and animal shelters, Bat World Sanctuary provides an alternative to euthanasia and advocates for better treatment and understanding of these misunderstood creatures.
