FEATURED NATIVE TREE: Castanea dentata, American chestnut
Chestnut was once a dominant tree in forests ranging from New England to the Appalachians. Beginning in 1906, a fungus native to Asia killed all the large specimens. The blight-resistant roots continue to send up small shoots, but they store the fungus, meaning any new shoots the roots put up will experience the same problem.
