FEATURED NATIVE TREE: Alnus serrulata, smooth alder

A large shrub or small tree found in wetlands. Alder blooms in late winter, with yellow male catkins hanging like ribbons and tiny red female flowers at the tips of the branches. The seeds are held in what 
looks like tine pine cones.
