HORTICULTURE TOPIC: Identifying Local Ferns
At our September meeting Nancy Percivall, Committee Chair of Horticulture, gave an engaging and informative presentation on identifying local ferns, many of which are found in our region’s woodlands, wetlands, and shaded gardens. She shared tips on recognizing various fern species by examining their frond shapes, patterns of spore arrangement, and growth habits. Nancy emphasized the importance of preserving native ferns as they play a vital role in the ecosystem, helping to stabilize soil, filter water, and provide habitat for wildlife. Her presentation encouraged members to incorporate native ferns into their own gardens to support local biodiversity. For those interested in learning more, the Key to the Common Ferns of Maryland, is a helpful guide provided by the Maryland Native Plant Society, which offers detailed descriptions and illustrations to aid in field identification and appreciation of these ancient and graceful plants.
