Living in the Triangle magazine held a Vegetable Garden Contest on Saturday, August 1, and Crofton Village Garden Club members JoAnn Cook, Beverly Frye, Sally Moore, and Nancy Percivall (Gardening Editor for Living in the Triangle) were tasked with touring six local gardens to select the winner. The contestants were Nora Bellows of Layton Street, Madeline and Kathryn Reilly of Straton Road, Lois Nichols (CVGC member) of Pleasant Meadow Road, Ginny Shearin of Farnborn Avenue, Mira and Ben Pry of Harcourt Avenue, and Katherine Mazza-Bell also of Harcourt Avenue. The gardens were evaluated on several criteria, including the diversity of plants, sustainable practices, effective design, and aesthetic appeal. After much deliberation, the top prize was awarded to Nora Bellows for her impressive display of eight planters of heirloom tomatoes, all grown from seed. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Lois Nichols for her beautiful raised beds, Ginny Shearin for her freshly picked vegetables, and Mira and Ben Pry for their wide variety of plants. The contest was a wonderful celebration of the dedication and creativity that goes into cultivating beautiful and productive vegetable gardens.
