Owls possess extraordinary adaptations that make them some of nature’s most efficient nocturnal hunters. With superpower vision that allows them to see in the dark, exceptional hearing that helps them pinpoint the slightest rustle of prey, and specialized flight mechanics that let them swoop in silently, owls are truly fascinating creatures.
At our October meeting, Claudia West, Birds & Butterflies Committee Chair, led a discussion on the PBS program Owl Power, which explores these amazing abilities. The program follows the journey of two barn owl chicks, Luna and Lily, from the moment they hatch to their transformation into fully fledged owls with remarkable skills. Raised by longtime bird handlers and trainers Lloyd and Rose Buck in the English countryside, Luna and Lily’s growth is documented in stunning detail. In just two weeks, their eyes open to the world, and by two months, they’re nearly adult-sized and beginning flight practice. Through this documentary, viewers gain insight into the science behind owl vision, hearing, and flight, as well as the deep bond between the owls and their human caretakers. Comments are closed.
